T3: extension project gets the go-ahead

Paris City Council, the Ile-de-France region and RATP have signed an agreement to extend the tramway.

The new 14.5 km section linking Porte d’Ivry to Porte de la Chapelle will enter into service in 2012.

The T3 skirts around the edge of Paris, mainly on the Boulevards des Maréchaux. The first section of the T3, from Pont du Garigliano (15th arrondissement) to Porte d’Ivry (13th arrondissement) has been in service since December 2006. With 110,000 passengers during the week and 70,000 at weekends, it has proved a great success. What is more, it has improved quality of life in the areas through which it passes, calming down traffic and reducing air and noise pollution.

The extension of T3 to Porte de la Chapelle (18th arrondissement) has the same aims. It will strengthen transport provision in Paris and the Ile-de-France. It will improve the quality of life of local residents through urban redevelopment. It will also stimulate the economy of developing areas.

Paris City Council, the Ile-de-France Region and the RATP all signed an agreement to build this extension to the line, which is scheduled to enter into service in 2012.

Shared funding

Paris City Council will provide €433.6 million and the Ile-de-France region €218.3 million. The urban redevelopment work will be paid for by the municipality (€149 million). €75.68 million will be spent on the purchase of trams from Alstom.

Coming soon: T7

The T7 tram line will link Villejuif to Athis-Mons. This major project will make travel easier within the departments of Val-de-Marne and Essonne, as well as facilitating exchanges with Paris. T7 will serve the Orly-Rungis business hub, which is home to more than 70,000 jobs.

Due to enter into service in 2013, the tramway will serve the towns of Villejuif, Vitry-sur-Seine, L’Haÿ-les-Roses, Chevilly-Larue, Thiais, Rungis, Orly, Villeneuve-le-Roi, Paray-Vieille Poste and Athis-Mons. Its 18 stations are expected to be used by 36,000 passengers each day, giving a total of 9.7 million passengers a year.

The tram makes its big comeback

Since the 1990s, the RATP Group has been developing a tram network, first in the outskirts and then in Paris.
