60 years of innovation serving passengers

RATP (Régie Autonome des Transports Parisiens) was created on 1 January, 1949 to manage all means of public transport in Paris and the suburbs. Until 1944 this was carried out by private companies. Since then, RATP has continuously striven to modernise and expand the Île-de-France multimodal network, becoming responsible for a number of world firsts. The Group has been designing metros and RER networks in a number of countries for decades now, and as part of its international development, it currently operates networks worldwide.

60 years of shared history

logofinalratp60 2In 2009, a 360° event – based on emotions, sharing and RATP’s ability to deal with the challenges of the future – gave the Company an opportunity to share its 60th anniversary with Île-de-France residents. A photography exhibition that brought together several important news magazines and mobilised several RATP teams was at the heart of the event. It was a gala occasion helping people to relive the great moments marking RATP’s development and their impact on Paris and its inhabitants. From 15 September to 4 October, this monumental exhibition was held at the Centre Pompidou piazza, displayed on a 5-metre tall and 22-metre long wall made out of ceramic tiles identical to the ones covering metro station walls. The exhibition was reproduced at the same time on metro line 14’s platforms, in the interior thoroughfare of the Maison de la RATP and on the ratp.fr website. Paris Match magazine printed 600,000 copies of a special supplement, while Europe 1 radio station broadcast a morning chronicle for two weeks, letting passengers talk about the kinds of things that they see on the metro and how they feel about it.  For three weeks, RTL radio station ran a daily quiz on RATP’s history, and for two months the Le Parisien newspaper ran features honouring the men and women of RATP through a series of portraits devoted to the Company’s many different professions. Within the Group, a mobile van equipped with a video system and baptised “Studio 60” recorded narratives by employees from different RATP sites throughout the month of October, before broadcasting them via the Company’s Urban Web intranet.

  • "Metro, bus, RER, etc. Shared life stories"

    A film by Yamina Benguigui
Rather than wanting a film that simply retraced its history, for this documentary RATP chose committed film director Yamina Benguigui and her production company Elemiah, whose ambition is to promote multicultural diversity in television and cinema. It gave complete freedom to the director whose work is renowned for its sensitivity, understanding and humanist slant. Yamina Benguigui chose ten testimonials from passengers and agents to help recall the 60 years that have gone by. These little stories were edited together to form a sort of great story book, about men and women who, during their travels, have encountered love or work, saved a life, assisted the birth of a child or simply found comfort during their journey.
