Behind-the-scenes

Line 6: service is suspended between Montparnasse Bienvenüe and Trocadéro metro stations from 1 July to 1 September 2019 inclusive

Service on this section will be suspended for viaduct renovation.

From 1 July to 1 September, a replacement bus will operate between the Montparnasse Bienvenüe and Trocadéro metro stations, in both directions and at the same frequency as the metro.

From 15 to 18 August, buses on routes 22 and 30 will also be more frequent to cover service between Trocadéro and Charles de Gaulle-Étoile.

Why are these works taking place?

Since 1903, the metro has operated on elegant viaducts that mark the Paris skyline. Over a hundred years old, these works of art have withstood the test of time remarkably and absorbed the massive increase in traffic. It is thus essential to repair and maintain them so that metro trains can continue to circulate safely.

What will the renovations entail?

  • After having removed the ballast, the damaged brickwork and vault side wings are purged and repaired.

  • A resin is used to solidify the structure.

  • All the metallic arches are then stripped and the corroded elements are replaced.

  • Protective paint is added to give a new lease of life to this distinctive structure.

Glossary:

Arch: the part of a bridge between two supports.
Ballast: the bed of crushed stone which supports the sleepers.
Arch side wing: a section of the arch.
