Why calculate greenhouse gas emissions due to travel?

Summary

We provide CO2 information to enable each passenger to measure the carbon impact of their travels in terms of CO2 emissions.

In France, transport is the number one source of greenhouse gas emissions. That is why each person’s behaviour can help change trends and fight climate change.

To calculate greenhouse gas emissions, RATP complies with Article L 1431-3 of the Transport Code and Decree No. 2011-1336 of 24 October 2011. The emissions taken into account are deduced from the energy consumption necessary to operate the means of transport used. For transport using fossil fuels, CO2 emissions are those generated by burning fuel (diesel, natural gas for vehicles, biogas, etc.). For rail transport, CO2 emissions that fall within the scope of the decree are those necessary for the production and supply of the electricity used.

The following table shows the emissions that are generated by a single passenger making a 1 km journey, using one of the different modes of transport operated by RATP, a car, or the Transilien suburban rail network operated by SNCF:
