Summary
Did you know that the largest vaulted ceiling on the Paris metro network can be found at Porte de Montreuil station? Spanning 22.5 metres and covering a 6,000m2 surface, the vaulted ceiling is tiled with over 53,000 bevelled tiles.
The vast majority of stations on the network are built deep underground, with a vaulted ceiling whose “basket handle” shape is fully tiled with the famous white bevelled tiles, which best reflect light and intensify it.
Some stations are not vaulted, but are instead covered by a metal structure when they cannot be dug deep underground. In such instances, they are built just under the street and the road is torn open for open pit works. The station is then covered by a deck comprised of metal beams and smaller brick vaults.
