4-Step protection for your bike

Significantly reduce the risk of bike theft by following these 4 steps:

Buy a secure and resistant bike lock

A good-quality lock is the first line of defence against bike theft.

We recommend that you choose a lock that has been tested and certified FUB 2 roues (identified by the logo above), which the French federation of cyclists (FUB) awards to locks that withstand attacks using aggressive power tools. Some insurers require certification at this level.

If you need help in choosing the right bike lock, visit the FUB’s website, which compares over 450 locks that the federation has tested since 2004.

Good to know: D-locks strike the best balance between weight and resistance. In general, chains are heavier and cables are not as resistant.

Always lock up your bike

Fasten your bike at all times! Don’t forget that risks are always present. Whether you’re in a public place, at the entrance of a building or on private property, make no exceptions, even for a short stop. Two minutes is all it takes!

In a study* conducted by ADMA (Académie des expert·es en Mobilités Actives, French academy of active mobility experts), 41% of bike thefts occur on private property. Out of these stolen bikes, over half of them were parked either without a lock (41%), or with a lock, but not attached to a permanent fixture (21%).

Fasten your bike to a permanent fixture and choose a visible location

Our tips ?

Secure your bike to a permanent fixture, ideally by using 2 D locks. Ensure that you fasten the frame and both wheels.

Choose frequented areas, meaning those that are visible and with a regular human presence (instead of secluded alleys), notably in the vicinity of train stations.

Get your bike engraved

Increase your chances of retrieving your bike after it’s stolen, by getting it engraved with a Bicycode mark. Thousands of bikes have been returned to their owners because of these markings.

The Bicycode system, which the FUB established, consists of marking a unique number on the frame of the bike. The number has to be registered on the https://moncompte.bicycode.eu platform, where you can enter your particulars.

If your mark is not engraved, feel free to visit an FUB association close to where you are to get your bike engraved.

Did you know? You can track the status of your bike with its marking at www.apic-asso.fr.
