MF19 rolls out across 8 metro lines

By 2033, the new MF19 rolling stock will be operating on eight metro lines. In 2025, the first trains of this next-generation metro entered service on line 10. Here’s everything you need to know about the arrival of this new rolling stock, which requires extensive infrastructure upgrades and station improvement works.

A landmark project

On behalf of Île-de-France Mobilités, RATP is gradually replacing the existing trains on metro lines 3, 3bis, 7, 7bis, 8, 10, 12, and 13 with a new train, the MF19, which will be running across all eight lines by 2033.

Designed and manufactured by Alstom, this more modern metro train will enhance the travel experience for all passengers, offering greater comfort, improved safety, and enhanced on-board passenger information.

To accommodate these new trains and deploy these services, metro infrastructure must be upgraded and equipped with more modern, higher-performance transport systems. This includes tracks, platforms, station access points, power supply systems, signalling and communication systems for the future MF19 fleet.

Service regularity and reliability will be improved on every line. This long-term project, delivered in stages, will renew 50% of the metro rolling stock and significantly improve the overall public transport service across the Paris metro network.

Project timeline

The MF19 deployment programme is a long-term project being delivered step by step. It began in 2022 with upgrade works on line 10.

  • 2022: Works begin
  • 16 October 2025: Entry into service on line 10, followed by a gradual rollout until summer 2027
  • 2025–2033: gradual rollout across the remaining lines

Following line 10, the MF19 will be introduced across the Île-de-France network according to the following schedule:

  • 2026: line 7bis
  • 2027: lines 3bis and 13
  • 2028: line 12
  • 2029: line 8
  • 2031: line 3
  • 2033: line 7
  • 2035: completion of line 13 automation

Ultimately, 103 kilometres of metro lines will be adapted to accommodate the MF19.

In 2026, the metro revolution gathers pace

2026 marks a pivotal year for the arrival of the next-generation MF19 metro, with work taking place on six of the eight lines. The new trains are already carrying passengers on line 10 and are being rolled out extensively on line 7bis, where the entire fleet will be renewed by the end of the year.

Elsewhere, transformation is well underway: line 3bis continues both daytime and nighttime testing, line 12 is carrying out major technical works, line 13 is entering a critical phase with numerous overnight test runs, while line 8 is launching a large-scale multi-year programme of works. The transformation is visible — and well underway.

Testing underway on line 13

As part of the introduction of the new MF19 trains on line 13, scheduled to enter service in summer 2027, a testing phase is currently underway to verify the proper operation of the new rolling stock and its compatibility with existing infrastructure.

Night-time test runs are already taking place across the network, and several testing stages will continue through 2026 to assess train performance, including traction, braking, vehicle gauge clearance, compatibility with the existing MF77 trains and thermal testing.

These stages are essential to prepare for the gradual introduction of the MF19 from summer 2027 and to ensure safe and reliable operation before passenger service begins.

The first trains are running on line 10

Three years after works began, the next-generation rolling stock entered service on line 10 on 16 October 2025. To prepare for the MF19, certain infrastructure and station equipment had to be adapted. By summer 2027, all trains operating on line 10 will have been replaced by this new metro fleet.

In practical terms, the new rolling stock required upgrades to several key systems essential to train operations, ranging from power supply equipment to signalling infrastructure. At the same time, passenger comfort improvements were delivered, including platform adjustments to ensure better alignment with the new trains.

Examples of upgrade works on line 10

  • Replacement of 2 kilometres of cables and 2,500 brackets
  • Platform edge modifications over 610 metres to match the new train profile
  • Installation of 52 train driving assistance systems
  • Renewal of 140 signalling assets
  • Installation of 3–5 km of high-voltage cabling to strengthen the line’s power supply
  • Installation of 288 track beacons enabling the MF19’s onboard control system to determine its position
  • Track renewal and rehabilitation over 3.5 km
  • Ballast and track maintenance using tamping machines operating overnight

These changes may be largely invisible to passengers, but they represent a major milestone for the project.

Five maintenance workshops adapted for the MF19

Five maintenance workshops are currently undergoing major works. Once completed, they will provide state-of-the-art maintenance facilities.

Two new maintenance workshops

  • Créteil, serving line 8 (by 2029)
  • La Courneuve, serving lines 7 and 10 (by 2031)

Three modernised and reconfigured workshops

  • Châtillon workshop, serving line 13 (by September 2026): construction of an additional maintenance hall
  • Vaugirard workshop, Paris, serving line 12 (by 2030): complete redevelopment on the existing site while maintaining operations
  • Saint-Fargeau workshop, Paris, serving lines 3, 3bis, and 7bis (by 2030): demolition of the former workshop and construction of a new facility

A train designed for passengers

The MF19 represents the next generation of metro travel, with new trains designed to improve the passenger experience. Its advantages include new, more comfortable seating, easier movement throughout the train, enhanced passenger information systems, improved security through onboard CCTV.

The deployment of the MF19 and the modernisation of associated systems will also improve service regularity and reliability, benefiting all passengers.
