RATP is preparing for the arrival of the MF19, the next-generation metro

The MF19, a next-generation metro, will gradually be rolled out on eight metro lines. The arrival of this new rolling stock requires extensive infrastructure work and modifications. We’ll explain everything to you.

For Île-de-France Mobilités, RATP will gradually replace the trains on metro lines 3, 3bis, 7, 7bis, 8, 10, 12, and 13 with a new train, the MF19, which will operate on these eight metro lines. This more modern train will enhance travel conditions for all passengers, offering greater comfort, safety, and onboard information services.

To accommodate these new trains and implement these services, it is necessary to adapt the metro infrastructure and deploy modernized, more efficient transport systems. This includes tracks, platforms, station access, power supply, signaling, as well as communication systems with the future MF19 trains.

Additionally, five maintenance workshops will be created or modified, providing a high level of performance for train maintenance.

On each line, traffic regularity and reliability will be improved. This long-term project, which is being carried out step by step, will allow the renewal of 50% of the rolling stock and an overall improvement in the Paris metro's transport service.

A long-term project

The deployment of the MF19 is a long-term project, which is being carried out step by step. It began in 2022 with infrastructure work on metro line 10. It will then gradually continue on the other affected metro lines.

  • 2022: start of the work
  • By the end of 2025: entry into service on metro line 10
  • Until 2033: gradual entry into service on the other metro lines

MF19 trains coming soon to metro line 10

Three years after the start of the work, the next-generation metro is arriving soon on metro line 10! To prepare for the arrival of the MF19, certain infrastructure and station equipment need to be adapted.

Specifically, this new rolling stock requires the upgrading of several essential systems to ensure the trains function properly, from power supply systems to signaling equipment. At the same time, work has been carried out to improve travel comfort, such as adjusting certain platforms to better align with the new trains.

Here are a few examples of the ongoing work on metro line 10:

  • Replacement of 2 kilometers of cables and 2,500 hooks
  • Platform adjustments to fit the new metro, over 610 meters
  • Installation of 52 driver assistance devices
  • Renewal of 140 signaling systems
  • Laying 3 to 5 kilometers of high-voltage cables to strengthen the power supply on the line
  • Installation of 288 beacons to allow the MF19’s integrated control system to locate itself on the line
  • Overhaul of 3.5 kilometers of track
  • Maintenance of the ballast and track, using a tamper machine operating at night

These changes may go unnoticed by passengers, but they represent a major step forward for the project!

A train designed for passengers

The MF19 marks the new generation of metro trains, offering improved travel conditions for passengers. Its many advantages include new comfortable seating, smooth circulation within the trains, better passenger information, and enhanced safety with onboard video surveillance.

The deployment of the MF19 and the modernization of systems will improve the regularity and reliability of traffic, benefiting all passengers.

The first new generation MF19 metro train is unveiled!

On Friday 14 February 25, Île-de-France Mobilités and Alstom unveiled the new generation MF19 metro (Metro Fer call for tenders 2019). Designed and manufactured by Alstom, financed by IDFM, this equipment will arrive by the end of 2025 on line 10 and will gradually replace the trains in circulation on 8 lines: 3, 3bis, 7, 7bis, 8, 10, 12 and 13.
