The Project at a Glance

Metro Line 1 currently runs across Paris from west to east, connecting La Défense to Château de Vincennes. An extension project is underway to reach Val de Fontenay, another major employment hub near Paris. This extension will help meet the area’s transport needs by providing faster, more direct connections to the cities of Fontenay-sous-Bois, Montreuil, Vincennes and Paris.

The project includes, in particular:

  • the construction of a 7-kilometre tunnel, two kilometres of which will be used to stable the automated trains in the rear station area of the future terminus;
  • the construction of 3 new stations, fully accessible to all passengers: Les Rigollots, Grands Pêchers and Val de Fontenay.

The extension of Metro Line 1 will provide connections with the following lines:

  • the future Line 15 of the Grand Paris Express;
  • Tram Line T1, once the T1 extension has been completed;
  • RER Line A;
  • RER Line E;
  • numerous bus routes.

Project Objectives

The eastward extension of Metro Line 1 has three main objectives:

  • promote greater territorial equity by providing the communities along the route with better access to employment and education hubs and major facilities, particularly via the Val de Fontenay transport hub (RER and Metro Line 15, expected by 2031);
  • support the development of the area by accompanying new housing and economic activity;
  • contribute to the ecological transition by providing a reliable and inclusive alternative to the car for suburb-to-suburb journeys.

An enhanced project since the 2022 public inquiry

This extension is not a new project: it is included in the Île-de-France Regional Master Plan and was already the subject of a public inquiry in 2022. The findings of this inquiry, together with requests from the French State, led Île-de-France Mobilités and RATP to carry out further studies and refine the project, particularly with regard to environmental issues.

This work aims to reduce the impact of construction, protect biodiversity, minimise disruption for local residents, develop ambitious mitigation and compensation measures, support affected businesses, and improve knowledge of the area's geotechnical and hydrogeological conditions.

Public Consultation: Have Your Say!

From 5 October to 11 December 2026, Île-de-France Mobilités is organising a new public consultation on the project to extend Metro Line 1, under the supervision of three independent guarantors appointed by the French National Commission for Public Debate (CNDP). Whether you are a resident, passenger, association representative or elected official, come and find out more, ask questions and share your views!

The consultation is taking place at a stage when the project can still evolve. It provides an opportunity to discuss the merits of the project, its objectives and key features, as well as the socio-economic and environmental issues, land-use planning, accessibility, alternatives to the project — including the option of not proceeding with it — and the proposed alternatives.

The contributions collected will help determine whether the project should move forward and, if it does, help shape it to better meet local needs, guide further studies and explore one of the proposed alternatives in greater depth.

How can I take part?

Everyone can find out more and submit their views at any time, either online via the Metro Line 1 extension project website or by attending one of the many events organised across the area, including public meetings, workshops, and information and consultation stands.
